About The WAU (WORLD ANTHROPOLOGICAL UNION)

The WAU– WORLD ANTHROPOLOGICAL UNION — 2027CONGRESS will foster collaboration, interrogate disciplinary methodologies, and explore innovative paths toward global equity.

Read about the WAU organisations IUAES and WCAA below, and find also info about the organising committees.

The World Anthropological Union consists of two constituent chambers, the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) and the World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA).  A major reason for merging the two organizations to form WAU was that a single unified body representing anthropology is increasingly necessary to advance the discipline on a worldwide basis. The need is especially acute in an era in which the discipline is called upon to have a global voice on issues involving anthropological expertise, and in which anthropologists are under threat in various parts of the world. The former IUAES Congresses became WAU Congresses beginning in 2024.

The International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) IUAES is a global organization of scientists and research/corporate institutions working in the fields of anthropology and ethnology, but also of interest to archaeologists, linguists, human geographers, political scientists, public health scholars, educators, etc. IUAES is the world’s largest and oldest global forum for anthropologists.

The World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA) is a network of national, regional and international associations that aims to promote worldwide communication and cooperation in anthropology.
